HALEU Supply Boosted with New North American Source

The North American supply of HALEU (high assay low-enriched uranium) got a boost this month with the delivery of the first 20 kg from Centrus Energy Corp which began enrichment operations at the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The plant is the only HALEU facility in the USA licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the first new US-owned, US-technology uranium enrichment plant to begin production since 1954.

The first part of the project, consisting of a cascade of 16 centrifuges began in 2019 and completed the final regulatory steps with the DOE last month on time and under budget. This is one step forward for ensuring the future supply of HALEU for new nuclear projects like StarCore’s
